At Montr, we believe your display settings are personal and should stay that way. This Privacy Policy explains how Montr handles your data. The short version: your data stays on your device.
By using Montr, you agree to the practices described in this policy.
Data We Collect
Display Settings
Montr stores your display preferences to provide its core functionality. This includes:
- Brightness levels per display
- Contrast settings (if enabled)
- Color temperature preferences
- Display profiles you create
- Custom display names
- Night Shift schedules
- Auto-activation trigger configurations
All settings data is stored locally on your Mac. We do not upload, transmit, or access your settings in any way.
Location Data (Optional)
If you enable the sunrise/sunset Night Shift schedule, Montr uses your location to calculate sunrise and sunset times. This data:
- Is processed entirely on your device
- Is never transmitted to any server
- Is never stored beyond the calculation
- Can be disabled at any time in settings
Crash Reports (Optional)
If you opt in to crash reporting via Sentry, anonymous crash data may be collected to help us improve the app. This includes:
- Stack traces when crashes occur
- Device type and macOS version
- App version
No personal information, display settings, or usage patterns are collected. Crash reporting can be disabled in settings.
What We Don't Collect
- We don't collect analytics or usage telemetry
- We don't collect personal information
- We don't collect display content or screenshots
- We don't have servers that receive your data
- We don't sell or share any data with third parties
Data Storage
Your settings are stored locally on your Mac using macOS UserDefaults. The data is stored in your user's preferences folder and is protected by your macOS user account permissions.
You have full control over your data:
- Delete individual profiles at any time
- Reset all settings from the Advanced settings
- Uninstalling Montr removes all local data
Permissions
Montr may request the following permissions:
- Location (Optional): Used only for sunrise/sunset calculation. Never leaves your device. You can use custom schedules instead.
- Accessibility (Optional): Required for global keyboard shortcuts. Not needed for core brightness control.
These permissions are used solely for the app's functionality and not for any data collection purposes.
Third-Party Services
Sentry (Optional Crash Reporting)
If you opt in to crash reporting, Montr uses Sentry to collect anonymous crash data. Sentry's privacy policy can be found at sentry.io/privacy. You can opt out at any time in settings.
Sparkle (Auto-Updates)
Montr uses Sparkle for checking and delivering updates. When checking for updates, your IP address may be temporarily logged by our update server. No personal information is collected or stored.
No Account Required
Montr does not require an account to use. There is no sign-up, no login, and no email collection. Download, open, and use - that's it.
Children's Privacy
Montr is a general utility tool and is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect any personal information from anyone, including children.
Changes to This Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. We will notify you of any changes by posting the new Privacy Policy on this page and updating the "Last updated" date.
